Annual conference

Each year, the Society organises a scientific conference, usually in the late Spring. The Society aims to hold the meetings in different locations throughout the UK -  the location is determined by the whereabouts of volunteers from the organising committee!

The meetings disseminate physiotherapy research and highlight topics relevant to physiotherapy research. They are designed to encompass a range of experience from the most experienced leaders in a field to those new to research. The Society welcomes new researchers such as those who have recently completed Undergraduate or Masters research projects and who would wish to present their research work.

Our Recent Conference

Our most recent meeting was held at Teesside in May 2010, hosted by John Dixon (second from the right).

Our guest speakers were (pictured from the left):

  • Liz Holey, Deputy Dean of Teesside University, who spoke about Connective Tissue Massage
  • Professor James Selfe from the university of Central Lancashire, who reported and discussed his ongoing research into "Cold Knee Syndrome",  which appears to be a sub-category of patello-femoral pain
  • Patrick McKeon, from the University of Kentucky, USA reported his research into postural control in chronic ankle sprain patients and the impact of both progressive exercise and mobilisation techniques
  • Professor Denis Martin from Teesside University, who reported some fascinating work on using virtual rehabilitation techniques with chronic pain patients in Scotland.

As ever, there was an interesting and varied selection of research presented through our Free Paper sessions and poster presentations. The abstracts for these are available here.

The prize for the best Free Paper presentation was awarded to Cormac Ryan for his presentation on "Promoting Physical Activity in a low socio-economic area" and the prize for the best poster presentation was awarded to Rufai Ahmad for his work on movement analysis of head turning in stroke patients.

The three highest scoring abstracts from the conference will be published in Physiotherapy Research International. These were:

  • Anna Jones, What makes an "ideal physiotherapy service" for people with Parkinson's Disease?
  • Cormac Ryan, Promoting physical activity in a low socio-economic area: results from an intervention targeting stair climbing.
  • Kim Rae, Effect of foot/pedal position on gastrocnemius and tibials anterior activity during static cycling.
